Netflix’s animated action fantasy K-Pop Demon Hunters is turning heads worldwide with its unique blend of Korean pop culture, traditional mythology, and supernatural thrill sparking a frenzy reminiscent of Squid Game.

“We wanted to create a work that truly represents Korean elements,” revealed director Maggie Kang in the newly released behind-the-scenes video. The film follows the dazzling yet double lives of global girl group members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey who moonlight as demon slayers in a shadowy world behind the stage lights.

Maggie Kang emphasized the creative vision, “We combined K-pop’s global energy with visually compelling demons and hunters.” Co-director Chris Appelhans and the team made a deliberate effort to immerse themselves in Korean culture. Their visit to Korea included traditional hanok houses, local cuisine, and daily life settings all of which enriched the animation’s authenticity.

The characters shine as much as their real-life voice actors. Arden Cho describes her character Rumi as “a fierce performer who also happens to slay demons with style.” May Hong shares, “Mira is snarky and rebellious,” while Yoo Ji-young explains, “Zoey is the youngest, always bubbly and energetic.”

Adding to the tension is rival group Saja_Boys, a male idol group turned villainous spirit-absorbers. Ahn Hyo-seop, who voices Jin-woo, says, “They steal people’s souls with their voices and appearances.” The cast notes their irresistible charm despite their demonic nature.

The fictional girl group HUNTR/X is not only central to the plot but also showcases true K-pop sensibilities. According to Maggie Kang, “Each member has a unique role in both the music world and the demon-hunting world and it all comes together magically.”

Authenticity was further bolstered by real-life K-pop talent notably, TWICE contributed to the film’s OST, adding extra star power and musical credibility.

Wrapping up, the cast expresses their love for the project. “It’s got K-pop, action, emotion, and drama all rolled into one,” says Arden Cho. May Hong adds, “It’s addictively fun and stylish,” while Yoo Ji-young beams, “There’s everything fun, sadness, action and we look really cute too!”
